Ye Olde Soir
The owner of 'Ye Olde Soir' has sacked it's editor for publishing a cartoon mocking Christians throughout the known worlde.
'Ye Olde Soir' published a woodcut portraying the Earth as a sphere orbiting the sun when we all know that God placed our flat Earth at the very centre of his Universe. Outraged Christian groups are now calling for the ex-editor to be hung, drawn and quartered for mocking this fundamental tenet of the Christian faith.
His Holiness Pope Benedict the Pious IV has graciously ex-communicated the former Editor and condemned him to burn in hell for all eternity to teach him a lesson and as a warning to others.
PS Does this post comply with the Government's new Religious Hatred Bill? I've got no idea!

Asylum charades
If asylum seekers and their families have "exhausted their asylum claims and do not take reasonable steps to leave the UK" why aren't their benefits automatically cut?
The Home Office should forcibly remove them from the UK, why bother with the charade of an appeals process when you can remain in the UK regardless?

Why the Jail rate is "West Europe's highest"
There is more crime in England and Wales than elsewhere!
The Howard League for Penal Reform, 140.4 people in every 100,000 of the population is in jail. This rate is 50% higher than France and double that of Scandinavian countries.
Is this really where we want to be? We have to end this country's obsession with custody. Prison should be reserved for serious and dangerous offenders. - Howard League director Frances Cook.

In return for service for their country in the USA in the 1940s the GI Bill helped thousands through college and university and we should consider and debate another idea: helping those who undertake community service with the costs of education, including help with tuition fees for those undertaking community work - Gordon Brown

Black British Conspiracy?
Why does the BBC give any airtime to people who think there is a conspiracy to prevent Black people from succeeding?
According to some, society [only] 'permits' black people to succeed in football and entertainment
If this is the case, how did society fail to prevent David Lammy becoming Culture Minister, Bernie Ribeiro becoming head of the Royal College of Surgeons and Dr Beverley Malone becoming head of the Royal College of Nursing?
Maybe Diane Abbott has a better understanding of why a Black middle class is nearly invisible, "the culture of the street".
I do know the issues around the education of black boys in this borough. I've seen what happens to black boys who get caught up in the culture of the street. It's hard to pull them back. It is a race issue because, of all the ethnic groups in London's schools, the only group that is falling behind is black boys.

Universities challenged in England
In the latest policy U-turn, David Cameron has decided to keep student tuition fees in England as Universities need to be "well funded" and the money "has to come from somewhere". Is Cameron unaware that Welsh and Scottish students do not need top up fees as their Universities are already well funded by England?
Could the money be found by reforming the 'Barnett Formula' or are a few additional Conservative votes in Scotland and Wales more tempting than the votes of university students and their parents in England?

Naturally, David Cameron is keen to impress the electorate as new Conservative leader but he needs to be careful. Too many photo shoots and policy announcements so soon after his victory could backfire badly. There is no need to rush policy announcements or immediately seek a dramatic new direction for the Conservative Party. New policies should be allowed to develop and mature over time. Will he rue rash policy reversals such as the recent abandonment of his "Patient Passports" policy having only drafted it last year? Has David's previous marketing experience at Carlton placed too much emphasis on short term results at the expense of longer term ambitions?

Scottish veto on education reform
Scottish parents should be concerned that UK Government proposals for education reforms in England "stand no chance of being replicated in Scotland".
Ewan Aitken, spokesman for the Scottish Convention of Local Authorities, said Scottish schools were hugely successful and did not need major change.
Oh really?
Nearly half failed the standards for writing while six in 10 pupils achieved the basic standard for mathematics. Pupils in Glasgow had the lowest pass rates for all subjects, where almost six in 10 pupils failed to achieve the benchmark grade of Level E for writing in 2005. Other poorly-performing areas were West Dunbartonshire, Clackmannanshire and North Lanarkshire..

A hospital driver has been suspended for making a Nazi salute whilst dressed as an RAF officer at a staff fancy dress party. He should not have been suspended, it was a fancy dress party not a political party.

Are the factors that lead certain people to accumulate wealth such as planning for the future and a good education the same factors that determine an individual's health?

Why should a smoking ban be scrapped just because smokers are too selfish even to care about the health of their own children?

Why are Central Trains unable to schedule any train drivers to work Sundays when it runs a daily service? Passengers should not have to rely on voluntary overtime to provide the service.

Trouble at the top
Do Liberal Democrats really think that a change of leader would improve their electoral chances? Liberal Democrats need to broaden their appeal beyond students, pensioners and the South West of England if they are ever to threaten the Conservative Party nationally as the "real opposition".

Why should anyone who refuses to let a Valuation Office inspector into their home be fined £500 and given a criminal record when anyone else needing to enter a property requires a warrant? The data collected by the inspectors will also be used by the Inland Revenue "for calculating capital gains and inheritance tax".

Perry Carter, 42, was jailed for six months after he admitted using the name of his wife's late husband to claim £11,000 in benefits. Mrs Carter, 41, admitted claiming £18,600 in benefits and was jailed for 12 months.
A woman does not share the "secret of her success" with anyone else, lived in a £1.6m mansion, owned stables and six horses, hired a gardener and enjoyed luxury holidays, claimed £127,612.20 in benefits, admits her guilt and escapes with a two year suspended sentence after writing a cheque for over £200,000 because she still has "young children".

Why should any English MP give up their ability to interfere in Welsh politics by supporting the 'Government of Wales Bill' when Welsh MPs will not enter a reciprocal arrangement?

An eleven year old boy chauffeurs his three elder sisters and another boy around in a Ford Escort before being spotted by the Police. Trying to flee the filth(!), the car reaches 70mph before mounting a kerb, careering across a green and finally stopping. Not wanting a community service order, he naturally tries to escape but is apprehended by the Police.
He is charged with "dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident, failing to stop for police, driving without a licence and driving without insurance". It is assumed the car was taxed and MOTd as it's also illegal to drive without these and I'm sure the Police would have charged him with these offences if the paperwork was not in order.
His punishment? A supervision order, tag and night-time curfew. Yep, he won't do that again!

Shock survey results
Why does the BBC think a survey of 200 cab drivers that finds they 'would cut fuel tax' newsworthy?
Would similar surveys that find farmers "would raise farm subsidies", lawyers "would raise legal aid budget" and fishermen "would raise fish quotas" also be reported?
Maybe the BBC were incredulous at finding anyone with a good word for Gordon. "More than half of those who took part in the survey said Mr Brown was a good chancellor."

Racist Arts Council (4)
Update: The Commission for Racial Equality consider that the Arts Council England writing competition awards are "likely to be unlawful under the [Race Relations] Act [1976]" and are currently collating complainant details with a view to a future investigation.
It appears that Wonko and I are not alone in complaining.

Thank you for your quick reply. Because the Commission has received many complaints on this matter we will allow all the complainants at least a week to send in their contact details before opening files for each one and initiating the investigation process against the Arts Council. We will inform the Council about the many complainants received to show what an outcry the advertisement has generated.
We will write to you when this information has been collated to set the investigation process in motion.

If MPs are demanding a pay rise of 22% as their pay has fallen relative to their public or private sector counterparts, why did they stand for election this May?
Whilst not sure who would employ Vince Cable, the Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesman, for more than £59,000, he is right for once! "This will be embarrassing for MPs. I could have earned a great deal more outside Parliament, but that is not what you go into politics for."

Who could possibly have predicted that the "tremendous opportunity" of EU enlargement would be a "tremendous opportunity" for Britain to surrender it's EU rebate?
