Child obesity

In shocking new research (if only for being common sense), three year old children who tend to be sedentary, ie watch more than eight hours of television a week ar at greater risk of childhood obesity than those who live more active lives at such a young age.

Will the BBC now act responsibly and reduce the amount of children specific television they broadcast each day?

I really don't see why society as a whole should be held responsible for obesity in children. Surely the responsibility sits wholly with their parents for their lack of interest in ensuring that their children obtain a good diet and plenty of exercise.

And don't come back with the old chestnut of 'they're poor and can't afford to eat healthily' that's rubbish. Obesity is not confined to the poor and the poor receive sufficient benefits to pay for the food they need.

Sometimes I don't know whether it's a lack of interest or a lack of knowledge about what makes up a balanced diet.

Don't worry about the old chestnut, I won't come back with it as I don't believe it either!! I'm always surprised by the numbers of young families who can afford to eat at McDonalds rather than have a good meal at home!!

Indeed - a bag containing 6 carrots costs 38p at my local shop. You can get 20KG of spuds for £3, 10 mushrooms for 70p and a lettuce for 40p. My wife and I live for about £40 per week - and we eat very well, on fresh locally produced food. Or we could eat at MacDonalds for £5 per meal per person. Go figure.
