Is the French Government allowed to threaten action against a hostile take over of Societe Generale under European Union law!?!
Some cynics might suggest the French would ignore any EU legislation conflicting with their national interest!

I have to admire the French, ever since Charles de Gaulle, they ask 'is it good for France?'. If it is not they ignore any rule. So much better than our supine 'leaders'.
EU laws don't actually apply within France, they are imposed by France on other EU countries. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

The concept of ´fair play´ is all fine and dandy when you are the one who determines what is fair, we lost the empire a century ago, so now it is really each for himself.
The French knew this truth. The british have wasted the last century trying to make ´fair play´ the guiding principle of the UN or the EU, we have failed. And now we are subject to somebody elses idea of fair play. Wonder what ´fair play´ will be like under the Indians or Chineese.
