The Great White Hope?

Being the son of a black Kenyan father and a white mother from Kansas, why is Barack Obama described as "the Great Black Hope" by the Independent newspaper?

Is it racist to highlight his racial background in this way?

It all comes down to positive discrimination, if somebody of mixed race, regardless of how close to being as white as your average anglo-saxon is, does well it shows that the ethnic minorities are contributing to a greater degree.
If an article was published in Pakistan about an Englishman entitled 'The Great White Hope' he would probably be strung up.
Racism should be done away with, especially when it is directed against the national identity of this once great country!
