Uniform savings!

"Expensive school uniforms cause worry for parents in low-income families and can leave their children feeling isolated and the target of bullies. - Helen Dent, Chief Executive of the Family Welfare Association.

Maybe low-income parents could save some money by giving up cigarettes, alcohol and fast food joints for a couple of weeks!

That's a bit of a sweeping generalisation Snafu. Not every family on a low income smoke, drink and eat fast-food!

You missed the opportunity to point out that a one-off school uniform is a much better option than sending kids to school to compete and lose in fashion against the more well-off kids.

Alex, it's a fair point and I recognise it's a sweeping statement. However, does every low income family struggle to pay for school uniforms!?!

I agree with your point about discouraging fashion competition! Do uniforms also encourage a sense of community and discipline within schools?

The private schools often have shops for second-hand uniforms. Please copy.

It's a topic we could delve into Snafu, and I think you're right. Not every low income family will struggle in that department.

Just posting btw because I upgraded my blogs to Beta and it ate them. Awaiting teccies to restore (hopefully). Just have to use my other website for now.

I'm the IB coordinator at an International School here in beijing and, JAYSUS!, I wish we never implemented my great idea for a school uniform policy. Nothing but grief from students, teachers and parents. Our students of course are mostly rich, spoiled embassy kids who have at least enough brains in their heads to know we're forcing them to look good to cover up our own incompetence and mismanagement...
