Save our jobs!

Would Labour MPs be less fearful of losing their jobs were Tony Blair to remain as leader if they were paid the average annual UK salary of £24,000pa rather than £59,000pa!?!

I have to disagree with you there. We should set the salary at a suitable level to draw talented people away from more remunerative jobs. Why do you think so many of them are former community workers, Cunard Line stewards, librarians and ex-polytechnic lecturers? Given that in Britain we have no constitutional protections and must rely entirely on the quality of our MPs to defend our liberties, it would be good to have some higher quality human material in that place. It is precisely because they are cash-strapped jobsworths that they are in such a panic.

The £59,000 is just the icing on the cake, it is just spending money. Allowances cover any expense you can think of, from council rates to car expenses. Everything else is subsidised from the numerous Westminster bars and restaurants to first class travel and probably even newspapers.
Holidays are the envy of the teaching unions. Everyone has numerous annual "Fact finding overseas missions" to exotic places with five star hotels and gourmay dinners with the best wines. Your future is guaranteed from here to eternity with gold pensions (which you get to vote on yourself) and either a seat in the lords with their expenses, a well paid job on the ever increasing Quango circus, or both.
And still it only attracts self publicists and the left liberal political elite class.
