'Cowardly government' rather than 'cowardly Britons', surely.

This sounds reasonable though:

"Scotland Yard were unwilling to meet the £50,000 costs of the operation"

Why are we always picking up the bill for investigations in the West Indies, Nigeria and other parts of the commonwealth?

Letters, that's a fair point but I doubt other nations will remember that!

Xoggoth, I'm sure the parents of the murdered young couple will be consoled that Britain was not prepared to initially investigate the murder on the grounds of cost or fears that their murderer might face the death penalty.

Snafu. I am sure some cooperation with the other country is normal when a Brit citizen is murdered abroad or one of their citizens is murdered here.

But it seems to go beyond that in some commonwealth countries and we end up footing most of the huge bill whichever way round it was. Why did we end up providing most of the forensic expertise for the Bob Wilmer case or spend 100's of k on the "Torso in the Thames" case sending experts to Nigeria?

Do Somalia or Jamaica or the DR Congo send us their experts at huge cost whenever one of their many defective citizens in London decide to stab each other? I do not know but I rather suspect not.

These countries have had independence for 60 years, time for us to stop routinely footing the bill.

Xoggoth, we're singing from the same hymn sheet when you say that after so many years of independence, we should stop bailing out former colonies!

PS I can almost imagine Monday's meeting at the Met Police about re-opening the Jill Dando files...
