Crushing EU expansion?

How many more Irish voters would have said "No" to the Lisbon treaty if they had known that their vote would prevent Turkey from joining the European Union!?!

Why do European heads of state assume that the people they supposedly represent are in favour of further EU expansion!?!

"Without the Treaty of Lisbon there won't be any enlargement." - French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

But let us not forget that the Lisbon Treaty can still go ahead if Irish voters are sufficiently bullied second time round (which they will be) or the EU finds a way of motoring on without them (which they will).

Maybe the EUmpire will go the way of the Roman Empire - i.e. enlarge to the East (and eventually split off the Eastern bit) while the western bit gradually crumbles?

Just how BIG is the EU going to get? Once Turkey is in, that will mean that sub Asiatic countries and former Soviet states can also join... I'd also heard that Morocco was trying to get in - which will mean all of sub Sahara could get in - Algeria for instance which has long associations with France...

When is enough, enough?
