The Four Minute 1.6093 Kilometre

Should British road signs be converted to metric in time for the 2012 Olympics?

They contradict the image - and the reality - of our country as a modern, multicultural, dynamic place where the past is valued and respected and the future is approached with creativity and confidence. - Lord Kinnock

It would be another demonstration of how the UK is prepared to sell it's soul to the devil.

What amazes me is how we and the rest of the EC still manage to trade with the USA? I mean, what with all those imperial measures over there..... how can we cope?

The reason is, the USA say "we deal in Imperial - if you want to trade with us, then you will have to trade in Imperial as well".......

Maybe we should have said to Brussels, "If you want all our cash to subsidise medieval French farming practices then you will have to trade with us in Imperial".....

But then again we wouldn't say that would we? we lost our balls years ago.

Alfie, I totally agree with you! It's not even as though the US have the same imperial measurements as us!

Only the British would ever consider hosting the Olympics and then bending over backwards so that tourists don't get confused.

When will Britain start insisting that continental Europe should start driving on the left? It was Napoleon who buggered things up for us, and that's despite being on the losing side!!

PS How convenient that the EU has no problems accepting that French poultry farmers can vaccinate / innoculate their chickens against dird flu. Has Britain banned the import of French chicken yet!?! What would the French response have been if it was British farmers that needed to protect their poultry and French farms had recorded no cases?

You guys aren't metric yet? Cripes, I thought the Yankees were the only ones still living in 1850.

Why should it matter to the EU if the US still uses imperial? There are A) more people in the EU and B) vastly more people in the world to sell to who are using metric.

Only the British would ever consider hosting the Olympics and then bending over backwards so that tourists don't get confused.

Feel free to bend over forwards and let somebody else have a "poke" at getting them instead... ;)

Kinnock is a pillock, he was a failed politician in this country and then as an EUssr commisoner he was an ever bigger failure.

The imperial is fine we do not need metric road signs.

I guess you don't need the Olympics, either. You're asking the world to schlep over and visit you. The least you can do is make it easy for us to get around while we blow huge wads of cash in your country. If you can't be bothered, why should the rest of us? Give it to someone who gives a damn, I say.

Lone Primate, I agree with you! Hooray! I didn't want the Olympics to be held in the England.

London is already struggling to find builders etc. Another large construction project is not needed for two weeks of entertainment. It's a large ego-trip for politicians and interested parties that will be funded by the taxpayer. There are far better ways to spend taxpayers money, another Millenium Dome anyone?

Any bets on how far over budget it will be or how many corruption scandals there will be?

It is about time we switched fully to metric. I learnt it at school, I am nearly 40 and still waiting for the UK to go metric. If we had kilometres on our road signs, instead of those awful European units called miles (invented by some imperialists in Rome before the time of Christ), then we would be much further to being a modern country with a sensible measurement system used by all and by the majority of the world. We expect the majority of the world to use the English language and they comply. So the least we could do is to join the international world and use metric.

Because we are the world's only superpower, schmuck. Deal with us on our own terms or drown in your own European metric red tape.

"There are more people in the EU"

Yeah, half of them wearing turbans. You don't even have a common language - unless it's going to be Arabic in a few years from now.

I dare say the socialists can't wait to blow even more billions of YOUR tax mney changing all the road signs for the benefit of foreigners.

I didn't particularly want them in Toronto when we were up for them a few years ago. As it turns out, our mayor made an off-colour remark about Africans that partly soured our bid, and we were spared the expense. Though our mayor made us look like rednecks. Like this guy:

Because we are the world's only superpower, schmuck.

Oh, yeah... the one Venezuela's sending cut-rate heating oil too this winter... that's, ahhh... that's pretty super awright, Stu. Yup. Bananas next? But only if they come by the pound, I suppose... ;)

Looked at your own demographics lately? Or should I say, ¿Has visto la demografía reciente de tu propio país? :)

No, he went on the radio and said, "I'm sorry... I'm truly sorry, I'm sorry... I'm very sorry... I'm sorry..." I'm not joking. He stood there and moaned "I'm sorry" about a dozen times in a row.

He didn't run last time. :)
