How independent is the "Independent Asylum Commission"?
It consists of eight individuals; Revd Dr Cannon Nicholas Sagovsky, Katie Ghose, Dr Shammit Saggar, Lord David Ramsbotham GCB CBE, Dr Sylvia Casale, Earl of Sandwich, Zrinka Bralo and Jacqueline Parlevliet.

Have just seen this second post.
To fill you in, the Commissioners are independent and impartial, and represent a range of different views on asylum.
In fact we have 12 Commissioners (you can find the full list and bios on our website). In addition to the ones mentioned there is the Countess of Mar (a former immigration judge who resigned last year because she felt the asylum system was being abused by economic migrants) and Sir John Waite (a former judge of the High Court).
The most important factor is that the Commission is independent of both the Government, and the refugee sector. It is conducting its enquiry on behalf of all the citizens of the UK.

Jonathan, first of all, thank you for the invitation, I will respond! The reason I question the independence of this asylum commission is that most members appear to have a vested interest in promoting the welfare of asylum seekers. Furthermore, I imagine that most representations made to the commission will be from the "third sector" who would need to find new roles if asylum seekers did not specifically choose the UK as their asylum.
If asylum seekers have suffered torture or fear of death, I'm sure they can face an early morning raid to remove them from the UK!
As the UK is an island, the only asylum seekers in the UK should be from Ireland, the only country that the UK has a land border with. All other asylum seekers are supposed to claim asylum in the first safe country they arrive at, not the UK.
By all means offer asylum to genuine individuals, but this should not be an open invitation to all and sundry to claim asylum here nor should the UK host asylum seekers who pose a threat to Britain's national security. By it's very nature, the more resources that are diverted to the needs of aylum seekers in the UK, the more attractive the UK will become to other asylum seekers!
I am not convinced the commission will consider any of these points. It is easier to label me a racist than to deal with the points raised!
Taking a step back, how does providing sanctuary in the UK solve the underlying problem in the country that asylum seeker was fleeing from!?!

Please do submit evidence to our enquiry - our Commissioners genuinely want to receive a broad range of evidence and no-one is calling anyone a racist.
These points will be considered. The reason why the 'third sector' responds to enquiries like these is that they make the effort to do so - there is nothing stopping any ordinary person responding and giving evidence. They just have to make the effort to influence our recommendations.
